The fact of the distance between the graphite layers being 3.35 Å (the С-С bond
length inside the layer making 1.42 Å) may serve as an indirect confirmation of the
possibility of interaction of the electrons through the cycle in benzene. This causes a weak bond between the layers and, as a result, the ability of the layers to shift relative to each other. Since the distance between the central electrons in benzene is less and makes 2.420 Å (in case of an interaction through the cycle), we should expect a stronger interaction.
